How to Spot a Leak in Your House

Water leaks can waste hundreds of gallons of water and unnecessarily cost you money. Because water leaks are often times quiet or slow, recognizing one can take time. Here are some tips to help you identify a leak.

1. Check Your Water Meter

• Verify that no water is being used inside or outside your home.
• Look at the leak indicator on your water meter, any sign of movement most likely indicates a leak.
• You can also check for slower leaks by taking a meter reading, waiting a couple hours without using any water, and taking a second reading. Any difference between the two readings could signify a leak.

2. Know Where Common Leaks Occur Inside a House

• Faucets: usually leaking faucets are caused by worn rubber washers, but sometimes the problem can be more serious.
• Toilets: leaks in a toilet system can be more difficult to pinpoint and may require professional help.
• Pipes: a leaking pipe can commonly cause water to pool below the leak, which may help you pinpoint its location.

3. Listen for Unusual Sounds

In most cases, leaks are accompanied by a sound, even if it is faint. Smaller leaks are commonly identified by a hissing noise. The sound of dripping or running water can coincide with larger leaks.

Any leak, large or small may be serious and difficult to fix. It can be helpful to seek professional help. If you need leak repair in Scotts Valley, visit this website.
